Community empowerment
It takes a village to make an authentic rug! Traditionally a woman brings an intentionally woven rug into her new home when she gets married. The men care for the sheep by herding them and even having a ceremony for sheering with songs and gratitude. The importance of this rug to a new home, is that it represents a strong foundation and start for the new family. Building the foundation of the rug, in fact, was a several days long ceremony of several women in a family coming together in celebration at the beginning and end of making a rug tapestry. Women are completely in charge of the artistic vision and the complete process once they receive the wool. They clean the wool, dye it with natural pigments, dry it and spin it into yarn. While the whole family comes together to make a rug, it is the women who weave, often working from both sides of the loom.
This is a beautiful representation of the day to day emotions of the women which were translated into their art. There are millions of vintage wedding rugs, and family heirlooms from over the last 6 decades. The weavers of these rugs would not otherwise be recognized, and among the new generation there are few who are keeping the tradition, skills and knowledge of handwoven rugs alive.
